Arctic Habitat - Tundra - Muskox (Ovibos moschatus)
***************************************************

The Arctic, where the continents are in touch:
the earth's northern polar region consists of the Arctic Ocean with adjacent seas, Finland, Greenland,
Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Russia, parts of Alaska and Northern Canada - it unites the northern continents
in much of its flora and fauna. Arctic life is characterized by adaptation to short growing seasons with
long periods of sunlight, and to cold, dark, snow-covered winter conditions.

Tundra, the final frontier...
The term tundra comes through Russian from the Kildin Sami word tundr meaning "uplands", "treeless mountain tract". (Besides the Arctic one there are two other types of tundra: alpine and Antarctic.) Its vegetation is composed of dwarf shrubs, sedges and grasses, mosses, and lichens. Trees can not grow there because the subsoil is permanently frozen
(permafrost). The boundary region between the tundra and the forest is known as the tree line or timberline.
During summer the top layer of soil melts, leaving the ground soggy and covered in marshes, lakes and streams.

Muskox
******
The muskox, a hoofed mammal which is more closely related to sheep and goats than to bovines, is protected by a thick coat against the harsh climate. The musky odor from which its name derives, is used to attract females during mating season. Both sexes have horns, and stand up to 1,5 m (5 ft) high at the shoulder. When the herd is threatened, the bulls and cows will face outward to form a protective ring around the calves.

During the summer, muskoxen live in wet areas, moving to higher elevations in the winter to avoid deep snow. Muskoxen will eat grasses, Arctic willows, woody plants, lichens, and mosses. The primary predators of muskoxen are Arctic wolves. Other occasional predators can include grizzly bears and polar bears.
